Gideon and the Fleece: Lessons from Judges 6

God’s Power Revealed Through Unlikely Leaders

In Israel’s history, few leaders were as unlikely as the judges recorded in the Old Testament. The book of Judges reveals a chaotic era when God raised up flawed and sometimes surprising people to deliver His people. Gideon is one of the most striking examples—a fearful, doubtful man whom God transformed into the instrument of Israel’s deliverance.

Gideon: The Fearful Farmer Called by God

The story begins in Judges 6. For seven years Israel suffered from repeated raids by the Midianites and Amalekites, which left the people hiding in caves and desperate for God’s help. To their surprise, God called Gideon—who was secretly threshing grain in a winepress because he feared being discovered (Judges 6:11).

From Gideon’s point of view the greeting was ironic. He doubted God’s presence and questioned how miracles could be possible anymore (Judges 6:13). Yet God did not choose Gideon because of what he already was, but because of what God would make him through His power and presence.

The Angel of the Lord: A Pre-incarnate Appearance of Christ

When the Angel of the Lord visited Gideon, He accepted Gideon’s offering and reassured him that he would not die (Judges 6:18–23). Many Bible scholars understand this theophany as a pre-incarnate appearance of Christ—God the Son revealing Himself in the Old Testament (cf. Genesis 16:7–14; Exodus 3:2–5; Joshua 5:13–15).

Obedience Begins: Tear Down the Altar

That night God told Gideon to tear down his father’s altar to Baal and build an altar to the Lord. Gideon obeyed, but he did so by night because of fear (Judges 6:27). His timid obedience marked the first step of a faith journey that would grow as he trusted God more.

Gideon and the Fleece: A Lesson about Seeking Signs

Even after God promised victory, Gideon struggled to believe. He asked for a sign—placing a fleece on the threshing floor and requesting dew to appear on it alone (Judges 6:36–40). God granted the request twice. While God graciously allowed the sign, Scripture warns believers not to test the Lord (Deuteronomy 6:16). Gideon’s story shows both God’s patience and the danger of relying on signs rather than trusting God’s word.
