“Then Jesus said to them all: ‘Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.’” – Luke 9:23 (NIV)
Jesus' words in Luke 9:23 are a radical call in a society that encourages comfort and self-centeredness. He calls us to daily surrender rather than convenience. However, what does "taking up your cross" actually mean?
What Does “Take Up Your Cross” Mean?
During Jesus' day, the cross was not a necklace or a logo on the church—it was a tool of death. When He invited His disciples to pick up their cross, He was asking them, "Die to yourself."
To bear your cross means
Saying "no" to sin even when it's difficult
Obedience versus popularity
Loving like Christ, even when it hurts
Forgiving freely, even when you don't want to
It's not about suffering for suffering's sake—but living sacrificially for Christ.
Why Daily?
Because surrender is not a single decision—it's a daily one.
Every morning brings:
New temptations
New tests of obedience
New opportunities to be like Christ
That's why Jesus used the word "daily." We have to wake up and pray:
"Lord, not my will, but Yours be done.
Following Jesus Isn’t Easy—But It’s Worth It
Choosing Jesus over self may cost you:
Comfort
Reputation
Even relationships
But it brings far more:
Eternal purpose
Peace with God
A life aligned with Heaven
“For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for Me will save it.” – Luke 9:24
A Prayer
A Prayer
Teach me to take up my cross every day and to deny myself, Lord Jesus. Please help me to live my life in accordance with You, not just what I say. Give me the courage to give everything up. Amen.
