How to Grow Spiritually When You Feel Dry

Introduction: When Your Soul Feels Distant

There are times in every believer’s life when prayer feels empty, worship feels routine, and the Word seems silent. If you’ve been wondering, “Why am I feeling spiritually dry?”, you’re not alone.

Spiritual dryness is a real, painful, yet purposeful season, but the good news is, you don’t have to stay there.

This blog will guide you step-by-step on how to grow spiritually even when you feel empty, dry, or far from God.

What Is Spiritual Dryness?

Spiritual dryness is when your heart feels distant from God, even though your faith remains. It often looks like this:

  • Lack of passion in prayer
  • Feeling numb during worship
  • Inability to focus while reading Scripture
  • Silence from God
  • A sense of spiritual burnout

The psalmist cried,

“Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me?” (Psalm 42:11)

Even David, a man after God’s heart, experienced dryness. So don’t be discouraged, you’re in good company.

1. Be Honest with God About Your Dryness

The first step is not hiding it.

God is not intimidated by your weariness. He already knows. Tell Him:

“Lord, I feel dry. I feel far. But I want to be close again.”

Honest prayer is the gateway to spiritual renewal.

Prayer tip: Start keeping a journal of your prayers. Write even if you don’t “feel” it. Your consistency is faith in action.

2. Return to the Word, Even If It Feels Silent

In dry seasons, your soul may not “feel” nourished, but the Word is still feeding your spirit.

Just like plants take in water underground before showing growth above, you are growing even when you can’t see it.

“Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God.” (Romans 10:17)

Start with:

  • Psalms (emotionally raw & relatable)
  • Isaiah 43 (God’s love and rescue)
  • John 15 (abiding in Christ)

3. Surround Yourself with Faith-Building Voices

Dryness intensifies when we isolate.

Tune your ears back to faith by:

  • Listening to worship music
  • Following Christian creators (like @Faithoholic)
  • Watching faith-filled sermons
  • Talking with a mentor or a prayer friend

Faith Tip: Limit worldly noise. Disconnect from things that distract you from God, even just for 7 days.

4. Serve Others Even When You Feel Empty

Sometimes, we wait to feel “full” before we serve. But the truth is, serving can reignite your spirit.

“Whoever refreshes others will be refreshed.” (Proverbs 11:25)

Volunteer at church. Message someone encouragement. Start a Bible study group. Do it weak, and you’ll grow strong.

5. Ask the Holy Spirit for Fresh Fire

Dryness isn’t fixed by more effort; it’s healed by God’s presence.

Cry out:

“Holy Spirit, breathe on my soul again. Stir my heart with hunger. Don’t let me settle for dryness.”

And trust this promise:

“I will pour water on the thirsty land, and streams on the dry ground.” (Isaiah 44:3)

Final Word: Dryness Doesn’t Mean Death

You may feel dry today, but you are not disconnected.

Like a tree in winter, your growth is happening underground. God is still working, still speaking, and still near.

Don’t quit. Don’t let go. Keep showing up.
Your breakthrough is closer than it feels.
